Noor Ali Chagani

(b. 1982)

Noor Ali Chagani creates works, composed of hand-made miniature terracotta bricks to demonstrate his unique take as a sculptor on the tradition of miniature painting. His work revolves around the concept of the absence of home; his quest for a personal space that he can call his own. On a very personal level, Chagani feels that bricks are a symbolic way for him to connect to the rest of the world. His brickworks also demonstrate a fascination with the symbolic power of colossal walls, which connote silence and strength. In contrast, Chagani also works with the idea of self-comparison with walls, as obstructive, stagnant objects.

He earned his BFA in Miniature Painting from the National College of Arts, Lahore. He has also been awarded Residencies at Rijks Academy, Netherlands in 2012, Riwaq Art Space Residency, Bahrain in 2013, and the Jameel Prize Residency, Victoria and Albert Museum, UK in 2016. Recently Chagani has been featured in Modern Painters Magazine NY in ‘Top Emerging Artists to Watch in 2018’. In 2022, Noor Ali has been awarded with Global Talent Visa in the Exceptional Artist category by Art Council England.

Chagani has since exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in notable institutions around the world, including Stanford University’s Cantor Arts Center, California; Katonah Museum of Art, New York; Abrons Arts Center, New York; Institut du Monde Arabe, France; Casa Arabe, Spain; Victoria and Albert Museum, United Kingdom; Pacific Asia Museum, California; the Devi Art Foundation, India; and Pera Museum, Istanbul among others.
