Damayanti Debnath
Damayanti is an interdisciplinary artist with six years of academic training in visual arts. She initially trained in painting at the College of Art and Design, University of Burdwan, West Bengal in 2016, and received an MFA from the S. N. School of Arts and Communication, Central University of Hyderabad in 2018, where she expanded her practice from painting to installation art, using ‘space’ as the canvas, while experimenting with different visual mediums like video, photographs, sound and text, along with conventional painting and sculpture. Working with a varied range of artistic practices such as an assistant art director in films, collaboration with performance artists, costume designing, stage designing for theatre productions and several workshops with traditional ‘Dhokra’ artisans, over the years she has developed her understanding of material aesthetics to a niche.
Her work has been recognized through the KHOJ International Artist Residency in ‘Peers 2018: Young Emerging Artists of India’. She had participated as a scenographer in the production ‘To the Starts’ by French play director and writer Jonathan Schattle. She has participated in several public art events, open studios and art exhibitions. Recently, she has been working as a studio resident, at the artists’ community studio space Vis_A_Vis at Vadodara.
Her works have been a part of the group show ‘Baroda Buzz’ at Gallery Art Positive, Delhi (2024); ‘The Poetics of the Everyday’ at Apre Art Gallery, Mumbai (2023 – 2024); Open Studio of Baroda Art Trails in ‘Preposition 0.2’, 079 Gallery, Ahmedabad; MAIR’s Open Studio, Mumbai; Space Studio’s summer residency open day and site-specific installation: ‘Greenhouse Museum’, displayed at Abhivyakti’s Edition-5, Ahmedabad.
