Anupam Sud
(b.1944)
Anupam Sud is one of the most eminent printmakers of contemporary India and is also celebrated for her fine drawings and paintings. Sud was the youngest member of ‘Group 8’, an association of artists at the college that was founded by Anupam’s teacher Jagmohan Chopra in 1967 and was dedicated to furthering awareness of printmaking in India. She acknowledges many influences in her life: her father who had a love for bodybuilding, detective stories, and Punjabi theatre, and her mother who appreciated classical music and read the Upanishads. It was after her return from Slade that she developed an intense interest in exploring human figures through the medium of etching. Often she weaves her personal experiences into the narratives as a way of fixing memory and feelings.
Sud completed her diploma in Fine Arts with a specialisation in Printmaking from the College of Art, New Delhi in 1967. With a British Council scholarship, she studied printmaking at the Slade School of Art, London (1971-72). Her oeuvre includes many significant exhibitions such as ‘Art Mumbai’ with LATITUDE 28, Mumbai (2023); ‘The Print: Matter in Matrix’, LATITUDE 28 at Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi (2020); ‘The Soul (Un)Gendered: A Retrospective’, DAG, New York (2019-20); India Art Fair with LATITUDE 28, New Delhi (2012-2015); ‘Celebrating Indigenous Printmaking’, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi (2014); ‘Convergence’, The William Benton Museum of Art, University of Connecticut, USA (2013); ‘Preparatory Assertions: Notes from Sketch Books’, a solo presented by LATITUDE 28 (2011); the Sixth Norwegian Print Biennale (1982); British Print Biennale, Bradford (1985); the Eight International Print Biennale, Berlin (1987); International Print Biennale, Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal (1995). The artist lives and works in New Delhi. Her works are placed in the collections of NGMA, New Delhi, V&A Museum, London, The Peabody Museum, U.S.A, and Glenbarra Art Museum, Japan among others.
