Revati Sharma Singh
1973
Revati Sharma Singh works across multiple mediums including ceramic, cast metal, handmade silver, gold, tapestry, embroidery and paint. Her intricate assemblages powerfully address world injustices such as the uneven distribution of wealth and the global hunger epidemic. When viewed closely or across intervals of time it is clear there is more than meets the eye both visually and conceptually, the layers of surface giving meaning to the depth of understanding and meaning below. Without reading the explanatory notations that accompany the works it is clear that something is organically unfolding during the experience of absorbing her extraordinary use of colour and technique, her layering of an image with a gently revealed, but bold truth, almost a philosophy that encompasses her unique take on the natural world. An ancient Vedic chant-like philosophy. Just as a natural landscape changes and develops over time, the artist evokes this same feeling within her work – look closely and you will see something new – subtle details that evolve in scope and meaning through time.
Revati Singh Sharma brings the Indian ethos of abundance juxtaposed with the barren browns of her backdrop. She brings into sharp relief that constant tussle between nature and humanity, the ongoing rigour of natural produce with human mismanagement and greed. Women have quilted stories across the length of India. Especially amongst agrarian communities, women stitch together old clothes into ‘gudries’ which are adorned with colourful embroidered wool. Revati draws from these traditions moving away from abstraction towards an element that holds a narrative. Revati comes from a family that has roots in rural Himachal Pradesh. She created a massive installation of 365 artworks, titled “hungry stomachs” made out of crumpled newspaper and handmade silver grains, it was born out of her research which found 800 million people go hungry every single day.
Revati Sharma Singh completed her BFA from Delhi College of Art. She has been a regular contributor to the LAPADA Fair, Saatchi’s Starata Art Fair, London and Singapore, Masterpieces Art Fair, London, Art Monaco in Montecarlo amongst others. In 2015, she created two multimedia installations for the Venice Biennale. Recent participations include ‘Playhouse of Her Mind’, LATITUDE 28, New Delhi (2021); India Art Fair (2018) among others. Revati lives and works between India and London, UK.
